When shades are drawn on summertime,
And the sun refuses to shine.
When maple trees take a curtain call,
Autumn leaves must fall.
When the fields are white to harvest,
And silos are full of grain.
When roadside stands sell the finest,
Autumn leaves must fall.
When days are short and nights are long,
And wood smoke fills the night air.
When cold north wind provokes a squall
Autumn leaves must fall.
When birds plan a southern flyway,
And squirrels scurry caching food.
When pinecones clutter the woodlands,
Autumn leaves must fall.
When fam’ly gathers in November,
And making mem’ries to remember.
When giving thanks, one and all,
Autumn leaves must fall.
When change has fallen to the ground,
And white water is a frozen sound.
When winter calls and strength is small,
Autumn leaves must fall.
